1. Intro
Aromatherapy and the use of pure essential oils is one of the most beautiful and supportive therapies for both mother and child during pregnancy. It can provide relief to specific symptoms experienced during
this time such as nausea and headaches and influence the emotional state of the mother to be; it can be used to prepare the body for birth and then support the birthing process, and above all, Aromatherapy
nurtures the mother, the baby and loved ones throughout this joyous time.
2. Essential oils to avoid during pregnancy include: Basil, Clary Sage, Fennel, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage, Ginger , Thyme, Cedarwood, Cypress, Juniper, Jasmine and Rose. Some of the above oils are believed to exhibit hormone like behaviour, others are far too stimulating, some are emmenagogic and some hypertensive.
3. Vaporisation is without doubt the most beautiful and safest method of use in the art of Aromatherapy during pregnancy. A few drops of Lavender and Mandarin from the outset can help create a nurturing and healthy environment and commence the bond between mother and child. The oils once released into the air are breathed in by the mother and within seconds a sense of calm is experienced.
Massage: There is no doubt that the application of an essential oil via the skin is enhanced when given via massage, which in itself can be mentally and physically relaxing yet revitalizing. Massage can stimulate circulation, relax and tone muscles and help release emotions. Above all, it can increase the individual’s sense of wellbeing and reduce pain perception. Studies show that women who receive touch during labour for instance, are more relaxed and satisfied with the process of birth. Remember to always err on the side of caution, if you are using Aromatherapy for the first time. Start with simple, slow flowing movements using the whole hand and follow the contours of the body working clockwise.
In Essence Aromatherapy, National Training and Education Manager, Pat Princi-Jones recommends that expectant mothers need some working experience of essential oils and their uses before she incorporates
them into her routine through massage.
“The general rule is keeping the dosage low. A few drops at any given time will suffice. Remember that essential oils are absorbed into the blood steam via dermal layers. Hence you should avoid prolonged
administration of any oil and avoid topical use during the first trimester,” she said.

Remember that essential oils are much stronger than their herb counterpart. After distillation certain properties of the oil are very pronounced and must be used with care. That is why if you are pregnant there are certain oils that must be avoided and if you have a diagnosed illness you need to consult your health care professional or a qualified aromatherapist to make safe choices. When buying essenitial oils it is of paramount importance that you select the finest quality available. Buy from a trusted retailer who is committed to the health and wellbeing of his customer and offers a premium registered brand.
